he Ohrid fortress, that was named as Samuil’s fortress due to the fact that the emperor Samuil at one point of its rule chose Ohrid as a capital of his Empire, represents a civil facility which is inseparably connected with the entire history of Ohrid, from the ancient times until the present day. The town of Lihnid and the fortress were originally mentioned in the historical sources by the ancient historian Livius (209 B.C.), during the rule of the Macedonian King Philip V (238-179 B.C.).This source tells us that by the end of the 3rd century B.C. the fortress was already built and that it had a prominent role in all principal events in the history of the town of Lihnid, today’s Ohrid.
